The Teaching Of The Fundamentals of Religious Culture for School Students Is To Be Discussed in Moscow

A joint meeting between the Synodal Department for Religious Education and Catechization and the Moscow Education Department will be held at 3 pm on March 5, 2013 at the Moscow Education Department. The meeting will deal with the introduction of the course “The Fundamentals of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics’ in Moscow schools”.

The meeting will discuss the preparation and qualification of teachers, the freedom of choice of the subject of religious culture, the extension of the subject area, the teaching of the subject the Fundamentals of Religious Cultures and Secular Ethics by high school level and year.

The Russian Orthodox Church will be represented by the Head of the Department for Religious Education and Catechization, Metropolitan Mercury of Rostov and Novocherkassk; those in charge of the Moscow vicar-bishops’ offices and their main secretaries and also those in charge of the teaching of the Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture will take part.

The results of the meeting should help to work out practical recommendations for co-operation between the secular and Church educational structures in Moscow in order to provide high-quality teaching for the subject “The Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture”.

This joint meeting is the preparatory event to the Moscow Teachers’ Conference on ‘The Fundamentals of Orthodox Culture’, which is scheduled for 16 April 2013 at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
