Why Doesn’t God Give Me What I Want?

People often ask why God doesn't give them what they ask Him for in their prayers?

The answer is simple and obvious: because God knows best what exactly we need and at what moment. Unfortunately, this answer does not satisfy most people.

For example, sometimes the Lord, not seeing how else to change us, sends us exactly what we have longed for. And then we are left alone with our dream and with our own recklessness.

There are many cases when dreams that have come true become a terrifying reality. But in any case, one should not despair. One just has to accept, from the very beginning, that not everything that we want is actually useful and is really what we need. And only the Lord knows what exactly is beneficial and useful for our salvation. And only He can correct all our mistakes – if only we have desire to accept His will.

How to pray in such a situation? We are given an example by Christ Himself in the Gethsemane prayer to His Father: “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

This phrase “nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” is the key here. Therefore, we need to pray more not for our wishes to come true, but for knowing God’s will for us, so that, in agreement with it, we could build our life.

Only then will we truly be calm and contented. Only then will we not be torn apart by desires. Because life with God and in God is a direct path to the Kingdom of Heaven, peace and tranquility in earthly life.

Since you are here…

…we do have a small request. More and more people visit Orthodoxy and the World website. However, resources for editorial are scarce. In comparison to some mass media, we do not make paid subscription. It is our deepest belief that preaching Christ for money is wrong.

Having said that, Pravmir provides daily articles from an autonomous news service, weekly wall newspaper for churches, lectorium, photos, videos, hosting and servers. Editors and translators work together towards one goal: to make our four websites possible - Pravmir.ru, Neinvalid.ru, Matrony.ru and Pravmir.com. Therefore our request for help is understandable.

For example, 5 euros a month is it a lot or little? A cup of coffee? It is not that much for a family budget, but it is a significant amount for Pravmir.

If everyone reading Pravmir could donate 5 euros a month, they would contribute greatly to our ability to spread the word of Christ, Orthodoxy, life's purpose, family and society.
