Today and Saturday, the October 11 and 12, for the first time in history, the feast of the uncovering of the relics of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco will be celebrated with hierarchical services at St. Catherine’s OCA Church in Moscow.
The celebration will also be blessed with the presence of the belt of the Holy Hierarch.
The Church of St. Catherine the Great Martyr is the representation church of the Orthodox Church in America to the Moscow Patriarchate.
The feast of the uncovering of the relics of St. John, is not marked inside Russia as a major feast, and therefore in previous years, has not been celebrated with such great attention as it will be this year.
The rector of St. Catherine’s, Archpriest Daniel Andrejuk, is working to increase the veneration of this great saint who unites Russians, Americans, and many other peoples.
On October 11, 2019, the belt of St. John of Shanghai will be brought to the church, and a hierarchical All-Night Vigil will be served, followed by an Akathist to St. John.
The following morning, a hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be served, and the faithful will again have the opportunity to venerate his belt, which makes this the largest veneration of the saint in the history of the OCA Representation Church in Russia. The services will be led by His Grace Bishop Alexei of Solnechnogorsk, the Vicar of Danilov Monastery, which is the official residence of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’.
OrthoChristian previously reported on the special memorial service held at St. Catherine’s for the victims of 9/11 and other terrorist attacks, with the American ambassador in attendance among other dignitaries.
The parish is eagerly awaiting the feast to venerate the belt of St. John and is inviting everyone to come and celebrate together. If English-speakers find themselves in Moscow, it would be a particularly interesting opportunity for them to see, as this is a historical event for the Russian capital.
